The design process begins with conceptual sketches and digital renderings. These are then transformed into 2D and 3D models to refine the vehicle's aesthetics, aerodynamics, and ergonomics.  Engineers then work on the technical aspects, including the chassis, powertrain, and electrical systems. This phase involves extensive simulations and the creation of detailed specifications for every component.[1]

The Manufacturing Process

What are the main steps in manufacturing a car?
The car manufacturing process can be broadly divided into several key stages:

  • Stamping: Giant presses stamp sheets of metal into body panels like doors, hoods, and fenders.[2]

  • Welding/Body Shop: Robots and skilled technicians weld the various panels together to form the car's body, also known as the "body-in-white.

  • Painting: The car body goes through a multi-step painting process, which includes cleaning, priming, a base coat of color, and a final clear coat for protection and shine.

  • Assembly: This is where the car truly takes shape. Workers and robots install the engine, transmission, wiring harness, dashboard, seats, and all other interior and exterior components.

  • Final Inspection: Once fully assembled, every vehicle undergoes a rigorous quality control inspection to ensure everything functions correctly and meets our high standards.

While the entire manufacturing process for a car is long, the assembly line portion is remarkably fast. Once all the parts are ready, a car can be assembled in approximately 20 hours.

Robots play a crucial role in modern car manufacturing, performing tasks that are repetitive, physically demanding, or require extreme precision. They are heavily used in the body shop for welding and in the paint shop. Robots also assist in the assembly line, for example, by installing windshields or heavy components.

Car manufacturing is a global effort. While we manufacture many components in-house, we also work with a vast network of suppliers from around the world who specialize in producing specific parts, from electronic modules to seating systems.[5] This collaborative approach ensures we use the best possible components in our vehicles.

Quality is a top priority at every stage of the manufacturing process.[3] We have numerous quality checks integrated into the assembly line.[5] Before a car leaves the factory, it undergoes a thorough final inspection that includes checking for any imperfections, testing all electrical systems, and ensuring all mechanical components are functioning correctly.
